@VompsyFefbro@DrEmilyHarris@Sam_Dumitriu You could say gay and trans people weren't a thing before 30 years ago too, it's not much of an argument. I'm going by the actual self-reported data of what people enjoy, you can stick your head in the sand if that makes you feel good.
@DrEmilyHarris@Sam_Dumitriu Aella did a survey on this a while ago, something like 1/5 women liked hard choking and about half of women liked "light" choking. It's far more a female preference than a male one, going by survey results.
@IanLabour@iainmartin1 How much do the top 0.1% pay? Who are they? How many of them are there? How much would be raised by having high income tax on them?
@WasOnceLoved A mortgage is indeed building maybe a few hundred quid of wealth each month, a pension the same. It's all very slow, and if you're being taxed at a marginal rate of sixty something percent you can't really do anything to improve that. Avg UK household is very poor.
@WasOnceLoved@Eldenofthering At best you maybe have 1k a month for saving. Want to earn a bit more and save more? Tough shit, marginal rate of around 2/3 from 100k-125k, unless you've got child care in which case it's over 100%.
@WasOnceLoved@Eldenofthering You're paying about 35% tax on 100k, add in student loan, pension, and 100k jobs generally being in expensive places, and it typically doesn't leave a huge amount for saving. So then you can either choose to live like someone who earns less than half that and save, or not.
@hoc9718@realhansard@grok Let the people decide what they want, but make sure everyone has skin in the game. So you have to have a basic rate tax increase of maybe 8%, or drop tax free threshold to about 3k as other nations have.
@hoc9718@realhansard@grok US tax as percentage of GDP is about 26%. UK is about 34%. We do not have anything remotely like the US tax system. But we also don't have a French or Austrian tax system. A significant difference is that the bottom 80% in the UK pay very little tax.
