"So how will you prototype?"
That one question has saved (and cost) more hardware startups than people realize.
This week someone reached out for prototype manufacturing. Simple enough — so I asked the obvious: do you have Gerbers and a Bill of Materials?
The reply: "No."
What they actually wanted was a manufacturer to do the PCB layout, the design, the engineering — for a product that wasn't designed yet.
And this wasn't the first time.
Not long ago I spoke with a founder who had a gorgeous UI, a slick landing page, beautiful industrial design for a wearable, and a laundry list of features. What they didn't have was the electronics underneath any of it. They wanted to prototype something that hadn't been designed.
Here's the hard truth about hardware:
→ Not every manufacturer is a design house.
→ The first functional prototype takes months — often only after a POC/MVP.
→ "I have an idea" is not the same as "I have a design."
So service companies burn weeks just educating founders on the Product Development Lifecycle (PDLC) before real work even starts.
In hardware, 0 → 1 is the hardest and most critical leap. Knowing what to ask, and whom to ask, isn't a detail — it's the difference between a product and an expensive lesson.
That's exactly the gap we're building https://t.co/GXHprYa5sG to close: helping first-time founders understand their 0 → 1, and what it truly takes to build a de-risked hardware solution. Launching beta soon for closed loop audience - apply for early access.

I was speaking with an investor recently.
He asked:
"What's your AI stack? How much AI are you using?"
I replied:
"We use a mix of deterministic logic and LLMs, but we follow a deterministic-first approach."
His response surprised me...
