@juliaiellis It really is a new age slavery and it’s awful. And it’s sick how many acceptable justifications there are when it comes to mass incarceration and black men being punished more purely on the basis of racism.

One concept that I’ll be sure to remember in the future is how Jim Crow laws continue to exist just with a different name. It really shows how history repeats itself and we need to remember and learn from past mistakes in order to prevent more in the future. #SOCL214

@alennddd Same thing happened to my best friend’s family who are from the Philippines. It’s crazy how long and tedious the process is just for them to have proper citizenship. Change definitely has to be made to our immigration process.

Based on the video, I think it’s ironic how we’re supposedly known for being a country that welcomes immigrants, yet trying to gain citizenship is essentially impossible. It’s obvious that a better system needs to be put in place for immigrants to gain citizenship. #SOCL214

@brat_tani I think it’s also important to highlight the fact that this was a conscious choice, even when there were more positive choices to choose from. And it’s clear that this choice was racially motivated.

Based on the video, it’s true that we could’ve chosen many other positive ways to respond to crime like mental health treatment or community service, yet we’ve chosen the deprivation of Liberty that African Americans are still subject to till this day. #SOCL214

I thought the video was a creative way to describe the disturbing history of the suburbs between neighborhoods of whites and African Americans. We can still see this kind of segregation in neighborhoods today based on what opportunities are available for certain groups #SOCL214

@AGiunta71 I agree, and half of the problem is acknowledging that the govt has taken part in those racial injustices to happen. But unfortunately like many other areas that need fixing in this country, bandaid solutions are the preferred option.

It is obvious that although not perfect, affirmative action provides some support for minority groups who still suffer from discrimination. Like many other things in this country, affirmative action needs to be modified to meet the needs of these groups. #SOCL214

@angelgrvce I agree, it’s pretty much a blanket statement to take away the recognition for their hard work. Just another way to discriminate against those who aren’t white. It’s sickening.

In order to eliminate xenophobia, racism, racial discrimination, and related intolerance, we need to get rid of these stereotypes that we have in this country against minority groups. One way is through more media representation like Asian-American actors. #SOCL214

@EberleBrent I agree, it’s like this because society treats privilege as a taboo topic to talk about which creates these feelings of being singled-out or treated like the “bad guy.” It’s just one of the many things that still needs to be changed and challenged.

I agree with the video that privilege should be viewed as a way for people to understand and acknowledge ones own privilege to better understand how people without certain privileges feel versus automatically feeling angry and singled-out. #SOCL214

@brat_tani I also thought that was really surprising, I can’t imagine the kind of household or struggles that family must have faced in order to be judgmental towards one another. Very sad indeed :(

The video called “Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo” reminded me of the conversation I’ve had with my two black friends when they told me the struggles they’ve faced accepting their hair. It taught me a lot about black culture and how hair is associated with personal identity #SOCL214

@gkins15 It bothers me that new movies feel the need to have a “white savior,” it just goes to show that more work needs to be done in order to have accurate representation and a more diversified cast in movies/films.

Although some strides have been taken to show black representation in films such as Black Panther, much more needs to be done in order to portray accurate representation instead of just stereotypes. The Oscars are another thing that needs to be reformed as well. #SOCL214

@AliTahhan23 I’ve never heard of it either and it’s probably because of what you said; society doesn’t take the time to fully address these issues so they continue to remain a problem as more and more people struggle with oppression.

I learned from the video “What is Intersectionality?” That intersectionality isn’t something that is black and white. It allows us to really listen to others, examine our own privileges, and question who may be affected by these constructs and what the outcomes are. #SOCL214
