The driving principle for PPE use should be the precautionary principle when case fatality is astronomically high, and no drugs or vaccines are available, as we argued during the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic, the worst in history. This should override "evidence reviews" for poorly studied diseases that occur sporadically. https://t.co/vFtMO3sYul
Good.
I'm glad WHO has warned that Andes Hantavirus may be spread person to person by airborne particles.
That's what they should have done with Covid in Feb 2020.
Then in March 2020 they should have said "Yes. There's no maybe. Covid is spread by airborne particles".
Would have thought if @Novavax targeted LP.8.1 as per @WHO they should already have safety and efficacy data from Japan that might be useful to expedite regulatory applications? 🤷 Please consider.
Australians needing choice for medical reasons are being profoundly #LeftBehind
AIR
EBOLA ALSO SPREADS THRU THE AIR
DEAR @WHOAFRO,
DON'T FORGET TO TELL PEOPLE IT ALSO SPREADS THROUGH THE AIR
WHERE YOU HAVE DROPLETS YOU ALSO HAVE AEROSOLS
WHERE YOU HAVE BODY FLUIDS YOU ALSO HAVE AEROSOLS
WEAR AN N95 RESPIRATOR
@WHO
Pls tell them @WHOWPRO
Sigh 😔
Literally no Ebola expert ever said “less PPE is better”. Workers were forced to wear surgical masks because they didn’t have access to respirators. They are forced to do so again because USAID cut funds, not because of this silly invented controversy
I wish #Novavax would keep their covid vax available all year round. Covid never stops n there us always a wave in the summer. And they shud be available b4 kids go back to school. #CovidIsNotOver and also wear n95s n clean the air!
Worth remembering every time the world as a whole looks like a collapsing train wreck.
Tiny numbers of people generate the world’s mis/disinformation and obstructive hysteria.
It would take about a day for proper regulators to identify them on social media and shut them down.
“Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, that word we all dread...”
I’m sorry, what? What a ridiculous thing to say.
I can understand dreading diseases & other dangerous pathogens…
…but why on earth would anyone sensible dread the equipment designed to protect & keep them safe?
The dreaded words are not apparently:
Ventilator
Intubation
Internal haemorrhage
Brainstem death
Dysautonomia
Bed bound
Exponential growth
Incurable
No, no, no.
The dreaded words are PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.
🤦🏻♂️
If you dread PPE, you have no business in medicine or public health.
You don’t hear people speak this way about helmets, seatbelts or condoms.
It’s only PPE for airborne viruses that folks take an issue with.
Their unwillingness to promote the right tools will kill people.
It’s called incubation period because you’re “incubating” ( secretly growing ) the pathogen. i.e. you’re infected , you just don’t realise it until symptoms start later.
This seems to have been forgotten.
July 2022. @YouAreLobbyLud one of the few really out there trying hard to educate us about Covid. The pandemic we are still in. I have huge respect for him.
Who is communicating now in Australia?
Who is getting the word out - don’t get infected!
Take precautions! Mask up!
#Hantavirus Andes Virus Update: What We Can Learn from Chile’s Tracking Strategy! 🇨🇱🦠
At the recent emergency scientific meeting cohosted by @WHO and @UKHSA on 15 May, Dr. Claudia Campillo from Chile's Ministry of Health shared Chile’s incredible strategy for contact tracing the Andes virus in the Los Ríos Region. That is one of the highest incidences of Andes virus in the Southern Cone countries. Here are the key takeaways you need to know: 👇
👥 Not All Exposures Are the Same.
Health workers separate people into two groups: "Close Contacts" (family, housemates, sexual partners...) and "Exposed Individuals" (people sharing the same environment). Data shows that in the recent 5 years (2021-2025), only "Close Contacts" turned positive (about 5.7%), while environmental exposure alone didn't lead to new cases in this tracking group! 🏠.
📞 45 Days of Constant Watch
Anyone at risk receives a daily phone check-in for 45 days to monitor for symptoms! 🗓️ Close contacts are also tested 4 times (on Days 7, 14, 21, and 28) of RT-PCR to catch the virus as early as possible.
🤫 The "Silent" Infection Discovery
A major finding came from tracking a family cluster: a grandson tested positive on Day 14 but NEVER developed any symptoms! 👦🔬 This proves that asymptomatic infections happen with the Andes virus, highlighting exactly why mandatory testing is so crucial even if you feel fine.
🚑 Early Detection Saves Lives
Even in rural areas, Chile manages to get RT-PCR test results back within 24 hours. Catching the virus on day one of symptoms—or even before they start—dramatically improves a patient's chances of survival.
🌍 Therefore, while the WHO establishes its guidelines for contact management of the Andes virus, experts refer to Chile's field experience. Chile’s highly organized, standardized tracking system is now serving as a model for the rest of the world to manage potential outbreaks! 🤝💙.
Stay informed, stay safe! 🧼✨ #AndesVirus #GlobalHealth #MVHondius #Hantavirus
It’s time for the precautionary principle.
It’s time for public health to step up.
It’s time to admit that the Andres strain of Hantavirus is airborne.
We need respirators, clean air and isolation to avoid community spread.
1 of the 4 Canadians in quarantine has tested positive for hantavirus.
"Henry said 'the four Canadians isolating in the Island Health region had no known direct contact with the people who fell ill on the ship.'"

This infection has no known direct contact.
That's troublesome.
COVID-19 death toll far higher than official numbers, says WHO.
The WHO estimates the COVID-19 pandemic caused 22.1 million excess deaths globally between 2020 and 2023 — more than 3 times the officially reported 7 million COVID deaths worldwide.

We’ve known for decades that you should wear a respirator when cleaning up rodent feces.
Why? Because inhaling it can cause hantavirus.
It only makes sense to wear a respirator to prevent human to human transmission with the Andes variant.
It’s simple and effective!
A growing number of scientists have been sounding the alarm recently about how repeated Covid infections may be damaging our immune systems…
