Dr Sunil N Oulkar, University of Leeds, United Kingdom, visited NCPOR on Wednesday, 27th May 2026 and delivered an insightful talk titled “Losing Their Cool: Examining Ice Conditions in the Western Cwm of Mt Everest.” The talk highlighted recent research on the thermal and hydrological behaviour of the firn layer at 6,660 m a.s.l. in the Western Cwm. Using field observations, remote sensing, and an autonomous telemetry system, the study revealed unusually warm firn temperatures, active meltwater processes, and their implications for Himalayan glacier dynamics under a warming climate.
The session advanced engaging discussions on cryosphere change, glacier hydrology, and the broader implications of climate change in the Himalayan region.
