In Brazil, prisoners can cut 4 days off their sentence for every book they read. Yes reading can literally earn them freedom.
Under this education program, inmates must write summaries and personal reflections. Their work is reviewed, and once approved, days are reduced promoting literacy, discipline, and real rehabilitation.
