So my fam and I were watching Emil Sumangil’s Philippine Controversies Revisited on YouTube about Judiel Nieva and the “Miracle of Agoo,” and honestly… HOW DID THIS GET THIS BIG? 😭

Not sure how many of y’all were already alive when this happened, but a teenage boy claimed to have visions of the Virgin Mary in Agoo, La Union, and it eventually snowballed into thousands upon thousands of people flocking there, alleged miracles, messages from Mama Mary, a “dancing sun,” and even a supposedly bleeding statue. The Church eventually investigated it and declared the apparitions a hoax!

But watching this in 2026, I kept thinking about how easily Filipinos can still get swept up by a compelling narrative - whether it’s religious, political, or whatever is currently dominating Facebook. You see it with the DDS, and even with the Rene Baterbonia saga right now. Different circumstances, obviously, but the mechanism fascinates me: give people a compelling story, repeat it enough, attach enough emotion to it, and suddenly the story becomes bigger than the evidence.
