So, the word "retard" is offensive because it was historically used to refer to people with disabilities. Alright.

Well, so was "spastic" and "crazy".

What about "imbecile" or even "cripple"?

Defective. Invalid. Moron.

How far back in time do we want to go on all these words that used to refer to disabled people? Should we throw all these words away because at one time or another they were "offensive" to 2025 sensibilities?

No.

Language policing is fundamentally stupid. Because in 2025, there are people who DO think words like "insane" and "crazy" are wrong because they are "ableist." And if they had their way, half the English language would be cast into hell for how offensive it is to someone, somewhere, in some context.

Retarded is useful. Retard is useful. People seldom use them to refer to people with ACTUAL disabilities.

I don't know what it's going to take for people to get over this, but it's not going away. None of these words are. And I'm happy about that because I'm not going to cultivate my speech around what may or may not have been offensive at one point in time.

So, if you find yourself offended by words and colloquial language, that really sounds like a "you" problem.
