OpenAI Stole the iPhone 😳
We are at the beginning of a major scandal.
The details of Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI can be broken down into the story of two key Asian figures in this case.
Chan Liu
Senior engineer at Apple, Chan Liu, left Apple in January 2026 to join OpenAI.
While all employees have company laptops, Chan Liu ignored the request to return his, and then discovered a vulnerability that allowed him to re-enter Apple's private servers.
This genius wrote to a friend working at Apple: "LOL, I figured out how to access [the server], it's so funny."
Chan Liu downloaded over 1000 pages of confidential Apple engineering files related to development, manufacturing, and even the supply chain. In essence, he copied everything about the development of the iPhone.
At the same time, Chan Liu was working on an "iPhone killer" at OpenAI.
The second genius in Apple's lawsuit is Tang Tan
*Vice President of Product at Apple.
Worked at Apple for 24 years.
Led the development of the iPhone and Apple Watch.
Co-founder of io with Jony Ive.*
Apple claims that OpenAI actively recruited employees, and when Tang conducted interviews, he asked candidates to physically bring Apple hardware to the interview. Batteries. Circuit boards. Logic boards. Prototype parts. Real physical components taken from Apple.
One candidate, who was still working at Apple, said upon returning from the interview: "I didn't even know we could take those out of the office."
Tang Tan even created a "guide to leaving Apple":
Don't sign anything during the exit interview. And if Apple asks you to sign something, immediately contact OpenAI. OpenAI was actively intervening legally in Apple's own termination process, from the inside.
Apple states that it has discovered a clear pattern of departing employees who skip exit interviews, ignore security contacts, and take steps to avoid procedures designed to protect Apple's confidential data.
Conclusion:
All of OpenAI's hardware business was copied from Apple. OpenAI established a process of industrial espionage and engaged in it for a long time. They didn't need 400 engineers; they needed data from various departments.
Now, the debate is about what will happen to OpenAI. I'm betting on bankruptcy and the abandonment of product ideas.
Everything is discredited:
— Development is not unique.
— Employees are now labeled as
— participants in industrial espionage.
How much Apple will demand for all of this is still unknown.
