@AlboMP@QuentinDempster Shouldn't the levy work in both directions? Australian media leans a lot on independent social media users and content to feed their stories. Lets support this but make sure it works both ways
I really like the way you discussed this. And I agree that government needs to live within their means. It is not a sustainable model. I think we need a political shock in Australia so that we can take a fresh look at the track. A wonderful country, full of opportunity, with a government that unfortunately has forgotten to care about where the money comes from and isn't fostering efficiency and innovation. There is a misguided belief that seeking "efficiency dividend" and going through the show of hitting individual departments with efficiency requirements is a sound way to do this. Ultimately you end up with "3% reduction in budget in department X being distributed to another line item in a budget" creating illusion if efficiency. Worse, it creates incentive in departments to spend all of their budget regardless of if they need to. A dirty secret inside public service is the incentivised spending, especially toward budget season. All departments are incentivised to spend the entirety of their budget or more to bring in equal or increased budget next year. Every department does it. And it has created a false picture of funding requirements. Massive efficiencies are possible. Massive.
That is how many people are feeling. Also makes me wonder about other political parties in similar countries. Seems there may be a way to reduce inflation in many countries simply by eliminating the type of industrial scale redistribution of taxpayers money into these corrupt money laundering outfits
@durov@prestonjbyrne@creatorsmedia_ Standover tactics. Appealing lack of transparency and accountability. Imagine this committee of bureaucrats sitting there ringing their hands plotting how to get those pesky social media companies and make them pay.
@elonmusk standover tactics pure and simple. Wonder if there's a secret committee that schemes about revenue sources with absence of accountability and oversight.. a wild guess.
This is a message worth sharing. Taxation is a core part of a social contract. It has been abused, misused and for too long beyond transparency. We need to have clear budgets, a tax revenue base that is justifiable, accountable budget holders in government, and laser level clarity on its use. Technology is now so good that we should be able to have far greater public visibility, guidance and veto more frequently than during election periods. Something fundamental has to shift in this area.
@DNIGabbard@realDonaldTrump I genuinely hope there's accountability for this and other political deceptions magnified by government agency misconduct. Also hope this doesn't set a benchmark that results in it happening again in any direction. Accountability is really the only way to achieve this.
