J58, the SR-71's secret powerhouse, has been called "black magic": an engine that can push a plane from 0 to Mach 3.2 without breaking a sweat.

Pratt & Whitney designed this engine for continuous operation at high Mach number flight with compressor inlet temperatures above 400°C (750°F).

With it, the SR-71 set an altitude record in 1976 of over 85,000 feet, thanks to the superb engine powering it.
