My mother-in-law mentioned an old Kaalpetti gathering dust in Trichur. One drive later, it was mine. Finding someone to restore it took me from Fort Kochi antique shops to a Trivandrum legend to, finally, a corporate techie moonlighting as a craftsman in his wife's house in Kottayam. The box came back beautiful. But what stayed with me wasn't the brass fittings. It was everything that box has quietly held for four generations of women who called it, briefly, their own.

Yesterday noon my father in law left for his heavenly abode peacefully while I was busy buying this wheelchair for him to move around. He was 82, took both vaccines and took extra care to be covid free. Now this chair will be donated to Mother Teresa’s destitute home.
