Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Viazovska solved a problem that had puzzled mathematicians for over 400 years. Even Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton couldn’t crack it.
We live in a three-dimensional world, but Maryna solved a puzzle in an eight-dimensional space—something that’s very hard even to imagine.
She was born in Kyiv, studied at Taras Shevchenko University, worked in Bonn and Berlin, and at just 33 became a professor in Lausanne.
So what was the problem? It’s about how to pack identical spheres as tightly as possible in space. This question was first asked by Kepler back in 1611. Over time, scientists found answers for two and three dimensions—but not for eight.
Maryna proved that in eight dimensions, the densest packing is formed by a special mathematical structure called a lattice. What’s even more amazing is that she did it in just 23 pages, while earlier attempts took hundreds.
In 2022, she was awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics. She became only the second woman in history to receive it.
Today, Maryna Viazovska works in Lausanne, supports Ukrainian mathematicians, and brings pride to Ukraine with her achievements.
I served on the staff of Third U.S. Army as an operations officer, Chief of Future Ops, and Special Assistant to the Commanding General from 1998-2000. It’s the Army headquarters for Central Command. We planned and trained constantly for various scenarios that could occur in the Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz is the single most vulnerable stretch of water in the entire region and nearly the world. Iran has spent decades fortifying their coast and preparing to close it. The idea that Trump and his sweaty bro idiot Hegseth launched this war seemingly unprepared for it to be shut down and the barrage of missiles and drones that would rain on the region is the most irresponsible and idiotic military mistake imaginable. Hegseth spent the last year working out and fighting wokeness instead of preparing for war. He must go. Now.
I still can’t believe this clown said all of this. He’s never been to war. Ever. He speaks like he’s still up at night remembering his days on the perimeter of the FOB. He’s not. He’s the nepo baby of a successful plumber who never stepped up to serve. I just marked the 35th anniversary of the loss of my first men in combat. I went three more times to Iraq after that. We are being led by donkeys pretending to be war horses. Throw them all out this fall.
Colombia's president, @petrogustavo: "Right now they are bombing Caracas. Alert to the whole world, they have attacked Venezuela. They are bombing with missiles. The OAS and the UN must meet immediately."
@infantrydort@bryanturnermd Ah, another service member who convinced himself Trump didn’t attempt an auto-coup and foment an insurrection. You’re an oath-breaking Trump boot licker. Enjoy that legacy, you’ve earned it.
Just sent out this free piece. Its being said that what Trump is doing with Putin is similar to what FDR did with Stalin at Yalta. Nothing could be further from the truth. Trump could easily weaken a dictatorship and strengthen a democracy if he wanted. FDR would be appalled.
