Yesterday I received a RIF (Reduction in Force) notice from Kari Lake/USAGM/VOA, which basically says that I will lose my job on September 1. I am one of 639 colleagues affected by this decision, on top of about 500 who were already fired. 1/3

Most of us have been on administrative leave since March 15. This means VOA will effectively be shut down, after 83 years. And whatever your views on VOA - yes, there was room for improvement and modernization - it is a big loss for press freedom and for audiences worldwide. 2/3

Today (6/20), many full-time employees from across VOA and USAGM received Reduction in Force (RIF) notices, terminating their employment. Most of them had been on adminstrative leave since mid-March, after President Trump ordered that the agency be dismantled. Here is a statement from named plaintiffs in Widakuswara v. It’s been more than two months since I was placed on administrative leave, with most of my colleagues, and VOA was silenced for the first time in 83 years. Ongoing court proceedings will determine the fate of VOA, and the #SaveVOA campaign highlights its significance.

While Widakuswara v Lake goes through the appeals process, USAGM fired almost 600 VOA contractors including 50 J-1 visa holders. Unless they find alternatives, they must leave the country within weeks. Some could face retaliation in their home countries for their reporting.
