Danny Kerrigan

I am a Cambridge University Economics graduate, but I love playing, watching and writing about football.

The Haaland-Szoboszlai drama comes about because of the lack of a "penalty goal" option. All the discussion of VAR protocol etc is missing the point. The laws of the game incentivise Szoboszlai to deliberately foul, similar to the Suarez handball against Ghana.

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@Donald_Bogle V weird that your solution to disincentivise timewasting and disruption is to give the team a perfect opportunity for more timewasting and disruption. Imagining the huge delay while Kepa pretends he's lost his gloves after Arteta tells Raya to sit on the floor.

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

Pope sits on the floor to allow Gordon to change his boots. If a GK goes down for treatment then an outfield player should have to stay off the pitch for 1 min. Maybe the captain or someone nominated by the opposing captain. #NEWMCI

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@Donald_Bogle Making the original GK go off is too much of a penalty for genuine cases, but allowing a GK replacement is not enough disincentive and allows more disruption. Therefore my solution: some nominated outfielder. Various ways to select/determine that player.

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@Donald_Bogle Is that such a disincentive? They were already trying to disrupt the game and now the sub GK gets to faff around with kit and gloves, to go in goal for 1 min and probs not touch the ball. Play then stopped again to switch back as they have 11 on the pitch so GK can't just run on.

A disastrous move - football needs constant rhythm to be at its best. Hope the adverts are good!

Literally predicting that they won't win...

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@bookingcom I cancelled a booking (over £400) with free cancellation on 26th Nov. Despite calling, messaging and emailing the property, and attempting several times to request support through your website, I still have not been refunded. This is unacceptable customer service!

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@evernote I got a new PC and can't login on the web or desktop. I put in account and password and am asked for a Google code but I never had this set up. I click "need help getting the code" and then "Use a backup code" but when I enter the backup code it says it isn't valid.

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@Ankaman616 Not sure unmarked in the 6 yard box is the best "example" to have highlighted just because he somehow happens to hurt his wrist...

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

A journalist would start this tweet with: "I am being told that...".

But for club-specific @TheAthletic reporters the incentives are skewed.

David Moyes still has full support from the board following West Ham's 4-0 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion. #WHUFC

Did all these people subscribe to Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime thinking that they could watch every @premierleague game?

[Tim Stillman ⭐️⭐️ @timstillman_]

The issue with time wasting isn't just the literal wasting of seconds and minutes, it's the killing of momentum that comes with it and a game clock will be a big step towards legitimising momentum killing and slowing the sport down even further (as VAR has already done).

Worst Billing error since Enron #BOUMCI

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@Jhdharrison1 @NUFC @GoalkeeperXg @goalkeeper_com @SkySportsPL @SkyFootball @premierleague Think this is an example of a generalisation people make where they assume that if a GK isn't great at distribution then they are a bad sweeper, and vice versa, whereas clearly these are v different skills.

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

@DaleJohnsonESPN On Upamecano "shoulder barge" you don't mention the position of the ball, which is surely relevant? I can't go around the pitch shoulder barging people off the ball, so if the referee deems that Upamecano can't play the ball and Mac Allister can, shouldn't that be considered?

[Danny Kerrigan @DJKerrigan1]

If #ENG were guaranteed to get out of the group and were 65/35 favourites in each of the 4 knockouts they would win less than 1 tournament in 5. Judging team performance from major trophy success in international football is simply illogical.

What a spot

Watched back the 2018 WC Final on the flight to Qatar. Is that… It is, isn’t it?
