@AmericanGwyn I love that Melville addresses this explicitly at the end of "The Advocate" chapter: "for a whale-ship was my Yale College and my Harvard."
@GeltnerJonathan Maybe Dostoevsky, or Chekhov's stories, or Montaigne's essays. So many theological/historical/literary/philosophical questions come up in ways that challenge cultural assumptions. And more plausibly readable for freshmen than an epic or something self-consciously "philosophical."
@aaronlloydwhite Thank you so much! I am mostly off social media these days, not doing much sharing here, and I'm really grateful for responses like this!
Couldn't ask for a better review for Jehanne Dubrow's EXHIBITIONS: ESSAYS ON ART AND ATROCITY from @djkraft13 in @ronslate@On_the_Seawall.

"I want to be explicit that, when we talk about this kind of state-sponsored genocidal violence, “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” as the saying goes." A terrific post by @djkraft13 on the Night of the Murdered Poets--August 12th:
