STORY | 79 years of freedom: When Bhagat Singh, Batukeshwar Dutt featured on schoolchildren's buttons
As India prepares to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, a nearly century-old letter offers a glimpse of another India, where pictures of revolutionaries Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt appeared on schoolchildren's buttons, while political photographs found space inside classrooms too.
The letter, accessed by PTI, was written on November 5, 1930, by the then superintendent of police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Delhi, to J N G Johnson, ICS, Deputy Commissioner of Delhi, about activities at M B High School.
The communication said authorities at the New Delhi school were being lax about activities among students and suggested they might even be encouraging them. It drew attention to Class 9 boys, who were wearing buttons carrying pictures of revolutionary leaders.
According to the letter, photographs of political and revolutionary leaders had also been put up in classrooms. The police officer said the headmaster and second master, Dola Ram, were largely responsible, though the headmaster ordered the removal of photographs on November 3.

VIDEO | CJP Protest: At Jantar Mantar, CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby (@MABABYCPIM) says, "They have had a discussion. Within their own, you know, core group and they have decided that they will continue their agitation in Jantar Mantar. Though Abhijeet Dipke withdrew his hunger strike. He announced here that Shri Sonam Wangchuk after having heard the brutality perpetrated on boys and girls, he has been shocked, and he has decided to continue his hunger strike. Earlier, he was considering as part of a negotiation, and also part of the realisation that these issues are being raised on the floor of the parliament. So, he don't have to continue his hunger strike, that was one thinking which he had. But having known what heinous, unacceptable, obnoxious brutality Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat's police perpetrated on innocent boys and girls, Sonam Wangchuk has communicated his decision to Shri Abhijeet Dipke that he don't stop his hunger strike. He is continuing his hunger strike. So in that context, they have decided that they will continue the agitation, they won't vacate Jantar Mantar till Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. Those who have committed suicide as a result of the corrupt and surreptitious manner in which entrance examination was held. So the families where suicides had happened there has to be a compensation of one crore to be released. And the education policy which is centralisation, commercialisation and so on. They have their opposition to that. So this with raising these demand they would continue, that is CJP would continue to occupy this Jantar Mantar."

VIDEO | The mausoleum of the revered Sufi saint, Nizamuddin Auliya, draws countless visitors each day, some in search of spiritual solace, others drawn to the nearby resting place of his beloved disciple, Amir Khusro.
The dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin, as it is widely known, has stood in what is now South Delhi for more than seven centuries, ever since the Sufi saint was laid to rest here in 1325.
The spiritual and cultural standing of the dargah notwithstanding, the area in and around this iconic complex is marked by neglect, with broken pavements, garbage, and a general sense of civic apathy.
Historians point out that this, sadly, is not the fate of Nizamuddin Auliya's dargah alone. Several other iconic monuments and heritage sites suffer from similar neglect.
Sohail Hashmi, Historian, says, "This kind of filth and garbage that you see there is our reality, and its basic cause is poverty. You can go to any protected monument in India… just look behind the Taj Mahal, look behind Itmad-ud-Daula, look right on the main road at the entry of Itmad-ud-Daula, or look at the entry of Qutub Minar."
Syed Altamash Nizami, Joint Secretary of Nizamuddin Dargah, says, "There are problems with the sewage system and the roads, and at the same time, the people living here also lack civic sense. They don't know much about the historical significance of the buildings around them, and they don't pay attention to it either. We will request the Central Government, the State Government, and the municipal authorities to give this area proper attention because it is very important historically."

VIDEO | Former vice president Hamid Ansari feels the country's political process depicts "ideological decadence" where we have allowed money power in all its manifestations to "distort electoral outcomes" and failed to make them free and fair.
Speaking to PTI Videos about his latest book 'Arguably Contentious: Thoughts on a Divided World', Ansari said, "The basic principles are all spelt out on the first page of the Constitution of India. It talks about justice, equality and it talks about fraternity. Now, fraternity has not been given shape in our laws, in our actual practice. Justice and equality, yes."

PARI’s Jaideep Hardikar has won the Ramoji Excellence award in the journalism category in its inaugural year – on National Press Day. No one deserves it more than he. For nearly three decades, this unassuming journalist from Nagpur has consistently done some of the finest reporting on the everyday lives of everyday people. I do believe his book Ramrao: The story of India's farm crisis, looking at the agrarian crisis through the life of a single farmer who attempted suicide in April 2014 (and who Jaideep monitored thereafter for 7 years), is to date the best and most powerful book on the subject. Over those three decades, and always based out of Nagpur, Jaideep has worked at The Lokmat Times, The Hitvad, DNA and The Telegraph.
Jaideep’s article A fateful triangle: tigers, humans and development published in the People’s Archive of Rural India in August this year is just one example of his recent field reporting. He brought to the story a deep understanding of all three angles of that triangle. I should also mention that I’ve had the opportunity to watch him work with enormous energy and diligence, and grow in the field – he and I have travelled countless thousands of kilometres together in the countryside, mainly in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, but also in Marathwada. I believe both of us learned a lot on of those trips.
At Rs. 10 lakh, the Ramoji Excellence award is the biggest in Indian journalism. It comes from the Eenadu group of publications in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and has been established in the name of their founder the late Shri Ramoji Rao garu. I knew enough about him to know he’d have been very happy to see Jaideep Hardikar get the prize in his name today.

So a Blue Tokai opened up in Dehradun and my parents went there and were scandalised at the bread prices - Rs 180 for multigrain, they buy theirs for about 60 from the local bakery. That made me think of how causally my generation spends money. It never even occurs to me how much I spend on sourdough or coffee. And that’s why I’ll never have a house to my name like my parents 😑
Boomers really knew how to save money. Like truly save. Traditional investments (pf,fd) and truly saving is what made sure their children got financial backing. I am always surprised with what that generation managed with pretty modest salaries. Millennials, on the other hand, could do with a little JOMO like this piece says.
Ask any lady in Delhi whether she has a greater fear of stray dogs or the men on the street, and I think you will understand their most important issues are not about actual canines.
A speech for the ages by @ShayarImran in the Rajya Sabha. Agree/disagree with his party/politics but for sheer oratory and skilful presentation, a cut above. Brought back memories of the great parliamentary speakers of another era. Good to see parliament still has space for high quality speeches🙏👍
This story left me shaken.
