Chandrashekhar Mandal, a native of Ami village in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, founded Digital Labour Chowk, India’s first digital platform for blue-collar workers. Inspired by childhood memories and a rainy day in Delhi, he quit his corporate job and used his ₹40,000 savings to start the initiative. Since 2023, over 1 lakh workers have found employment via the platform. Supported by Startup India and praised by officials, it offers both visibility and dignity to migrant labourers.

👉🏼 From Labour Chowks to LinkedIn for Workers

Digital Labour Chowk allows masons, plumbers, and other skilled workers to register and find jobs without waiting on street corners. “Why shouldn’t daily wagers have their own LinkedIn?” Mandal asks. The platform now spans Bihar, UP, and beyond, with 5,000+ job listings and integrated access to government schemes.

Growing up amid poverty and migration, Mandal saw relatives struggle for survival. The pandemic further deepened his resolve, revealing the urgent need for stability among India’s unorganised workforce. 🚧 India’s construction sector employs 144 million workers and adds 4 million more each year, with a daily wage turnover of ₹8,640 crore. However, uneven industrialisation causes significant migration, particularly from the East and North-East.

🏗️ Migrant workers often rely on labour chowks or contractors, missing out on crucial benefits. This results in delays in 97% of construction projects due to poor hiring practices and difficulty in assessing worker skills.

🤝 A well-structured platform can bridge the gap between workers and employers, improving conditions, incomes, and the overall economic impact. Digital Labour Chowk (DLC) is a tech-driven solution addressing these challenges.

📲 DLC offers two key applications: Rozgar Digital Labour Chowk - for workers to find jobs in their industries, and Customer Digital Labour Chowk - where customers can hire skilled workers for their projects. This system formalises the labour market, enhances incomes, and provides pan-India job access. Workers also have the option of calling a number for the latest job updates in their area.

Founder Chandrashekhar Mandal, from Bihar, created DLC after witnessing the struggles of daily wage workers. His vision is to transform traditional labour chowks into a virtual platform, connecting workers with job opportunities across India and addressing labour shortages in the industry.

DLC plans to expand to new locations, create automatic worker profiles, diversify sectors, invest in skill development, explore microloans and insurance, leverage data analytics, and partner with governments, NGOs, and corporations. These initiatives aim to revolutionise India’s labour market.
