Senator Durbin talks endlessly about compassion, yet when my daughter Katie was killed by an illegal immigrant who had been previously deported, used false identities, obtained an Illinois driver's license, and drove drunk at nearly 80 mph, he defended the policies that made it possible.

In my view, after more than 40 years in Washington, Senator Durbin has always been a partisan hack politician who puts party and ideology ahead of public safety.

That's not leadership.
It's partisan ideology over public safety.
It's selective compassion and hierarchical compassion, where protecting a political narrative takes precedence over protecting American citizens.

Katie deserved better.
