"If Messi immediately goes to the referee to report that Cucurella covered his mouth before saying something, then the officials have a responsibility to take it seriously. Players don't usually react that way without believing something crossed the line.

I'm not here to defend Messi or Cucurella. I don't care about the badge or the name. I care about consistency. If the laws apply to one player, they must apply to everyone.
If there's even a possibility that offensive or abusive language was used, the referee and VAR should investigate it properly. You cannot dismiss something like that simply because it's a World Cup final.

The referee should have spoken to both players before allowing the game to move on. Whether anything punishable was said or not, that's the process. The worst thing you can do is ignore it completely.

Football at this level is decided by the smallest moments. If there's enough evidence of misconduct, action must be taken. The biggest matches deserve the strongest officiating, and fairness should never depend on who's involved."
