We know different people in business/law/etc, good management today recognizes that people are driven by different motivations, and that they can change
Some people I know in business/law/etc can't grasp the sometimes foolish (but maybe good) romanticness about trying to be, say, a physicist, or another kind of academic. They think it's a practical decision, not a calling, but sometimes it is. They can't conceive of callings.
A very important speech by Mark Carney (17 minutes well spent if you have the time to listen). Open eyed, with a concrete, positive, strategy for what he calls the "middle countries" in a world of hegemons. Feels good to hear.
There is a persistent myth that peace is naïve.
That the only ‘real’ politics is the politics of self-interest & force.
But the founders of the @UN were not untouched by reality.
They had seen war & they knew:
Peace, justice & equality are the most courageous, the most practical, the most necessary pursuits of all.

Only 1 out of 330 South Korean skilled workers stays in the US. Who will build semiconductor plants? 🤔
Trump offered to let detained Korean workers stay in US, but almost all heading home https://t.co/8WyB8wzC86
Remaining cool-headed and focused on the big picture is essential to avoid escalation and to set the tone for what will likely be a lengthy negotiating process
Europe is ready to negotiate with the US.
We have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods.
Because we're always ready for a good deal.
But we’re also prepared to respond with countermeasures.
And protect ourselves against indirect effects through trade diversion.
The way these tariffs are calculated is inflationary for USA: completely counter to Ricardo’s comparative advantage. Tariffs are higher on countries with which the US has a larger trade deficit, even though, in many cases, the structural competitive disadvantages cannot be solved
@BrankoMilan China is the world’s largest manufacturing nation and largest exporter, so one would expect that imports are a large percentage of their GDP. When it comes to tariffs, the USA is the world’s largest consumer market, representing 69% of its GDP compared to 51% for China
Even if there is no trade war, unlikely as it might be, it seems that the US is in a path that will weaken good governance, eroding institutional trust and affecting market confidence. It might take a while, but the lessons of history for these sort of cases are clear.
Even if there is no trade war with the US, the EU should continue concluding trade deals with other partners & diversify its network of allies. https://t.co/aZ9GJCiU6F

@MacroAlf US GDP has been growing above 2.5% in 2023 and 2024 (estimate), and these guys have thought that by announcing freak policies Americans will notice. The issue is why our societies, Europe included, have become so ideologically-biased and immature when it comes to the economy.
