Already have a product but not sure how to improve first-time UX? Ask yourself:
👉 What’s the first natural action a user should take? Create a site? Add a contact? Open a folder?
➡️ Instead of dropping them into an empty screen, send them straight to that action.
Want to get your SaaS users to their first win fast?
❌ Don’t drop them into an empty dashboard.
❌ Don’t force a video tutorial.
❌ And PLEASE, no “product tours” showing that Settings contains Account Settings.
The best products don’t need guides because they are intuitive.🧵
The best software guides users through what they need to do.
I love onboarding wizards because they remove distractions.
Hide menus. Keep steps short. Walk the user through just a few key actions to get them to their first “aha” moment ASAP.
Even today, users tell us "ease of use" is what sets us apart.
We've added features, but we’ve kept things simple & straightforward.
Great UX isn’t just about the final vision—it's about designing from the user's first second in your app.
Make that moment frictionless. 🚀
Your user just signed up and landed in your SaaS in under 5 seconds. Now what?
Mockups often show beautiful, data-filled dashboards—but that’s back-to-front thinking.
👀 What does a first-time user actually see?
Empty dashboards? A "Please wait while we collect data"?
🧵
That’s not a great first impression. Focus on the first few steps. When we launched our hosting our add blog flow was:
✅ 3 fields (with hidden optional settings)
✅ Sane defaults—best settings for most users
Meanwhile, a competitor had 5 tabs & 30+ fields to configure. 🤯
For most SaaS, the goal is simple: remove friction so users can start using your app ASAP. Once inside, get them to their first win fast. That’s what keeps them around.
Some products might need extra steps (like requiring CC for anti-abuse reasons), but those are the exceptions.
Your SaaS buyers are most excited when they read your sales page. Every step after clicking "Sign Up" kills that excitement.
No free trial*? ❌
Credit card required? 😩
Create a password? 🫠
Full name and address?! 😵
Verify email?? 😡
They’re gone by step 3.
🧵
Signup should be instant.
✅ Just email → auto-login.
✅ No passwords upfront, no unnecessary steps.
✅ Set a default password (change later) or use email login links.
✅ Don’t block logins for email verification.
More friction = fewer users sticking around.
@gumroad My company/card/PayPal is in a different country than I am. Your checkout prevents me from buying. It says to review, but there is nothing to review, click that I agree, or anything. You just stop the buying process. I haven't seen any other provider do this.
