In Double Indemnity (1944, set in 1939) the protagonist stops at a drive-through for a beer. I watched it Saturday night, and can't stop thinking about this.
In 1860, Jeremiah Bernard Collins left his native Cork & braved the Atlantic to start a new life in Cincinnatti, Ohio. A century later, his grandson, Michael, made his own epic voyage. Even as we mourn his loss today, we celebrate his triumph - ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
Agile methodologies don't protect you from falling into this trap either. It's very easy to adopt all the formalities of agile development without doing any experimentation or iteration. Think about why the term "sprint" is more common than "iteration" on scrum teams.
Software/product development is on my mind this wintry Saturday afternoon, specifically the ideal combination of the scientific method and iterating that is a unique advantage available to software.
Wrapped up in that term, "waterfall", are discussions on empowered teams, engineer autonomy, ownership, and many other things that I care deeply about. Topics for another day perhaps!
