Satisfying touchdown...

There is a lot happening in just a few seconds.

Just before touchdown, the composite wings of the Boeing 787-8 are bent upward under the force of lift. The moment the main landing gear touches the runway, the lift disappears and the wings flex downward as the aircraft's weight transfers onto the landing gear.

At the same instant, the ground spoilers deploy across the wings. They destroy the remaining lift, putting the aircraft's full weight onto the wheels so the brakes and tires can grip the runway as effectively as possible.

Watch the main landing gear closely. The rear wheels touch first, followed by the front wheels a fraction of a second later. This allows the shock absorbers to compress smoothly and absorb the impact of landing.

A perfect example of aerodynamics, automation, and engineering working together by design.
