"Who is going to be on your bus?"
A question my dad asked me at 18 years old.
You see, my dad was a man of few words but when he spoke you listened.
At 18, I was getting my first taste of success.
•Drafted 9th overall
•Signed the big contract
•Being told I was going to be great
There was a line out of the station to be on my bus.
At 23, I was getting my first taste of failure.
•Sporting a 6+ ERA
•Sent to the minor leagues
•Being told that I was a bust
There were plenty of empty seats on my bus.
A question that I brushed over at 18, hit home at 23.
"Who is going to be on your bus?"
That question is one I think about most days.
That question is one that has defined my relationships.
That question is one I thought was silly at 18 and cherish in my 30s.
That toy bus in the picture is the same toy bus my dad gave me at 18.
You see my dad passed away a few years ago but I know he was on my bus.
My friends, fill your bus with people that are on it for the long haul not ride the highs and exit at the lows.
My challenge to you is to consider whose bus you are on.
Do they know it?
If not, let them know.
Officiating isn't always easy and it's a job met with pressure and scrutiny.
From on-ice teaching to an emphasis on mental health, USA Hockey's Officiating Develop Program is doing its part to develop young officials in junior hockey.
