I will not participate in the AMIA 2025 Symposium and will not renew my membership. My time, resources, and energy will be dedicated to organizations that actively promote DEI” and create inclusive futures. #AMIA2025 #boycott #DEI
My advocacy is always built on three principles: • Protect Dreams • Clear the Path • Foster Belonging Words like 'equity' and 'inclusion' are important; they are powerful, just like me.
When I defended my dissertation at Columbia, I became the first Black woman in the U.S., and the first from Columbia, to earn a PhD in biomedical informatics. These milestones also revealed who was absent from the rooms shaping our field.
I was asked to establish and lead this committee a few years ago. Our efforts earned the AMIA 2021 Leadership Award for my leadership of the DEI Committee. We published AMIA’s Inclusive Language Guidelines (JAMIA, 2025) and "The Journey to Building a DEI at AMIA" (JAMIA, 2025).
Today, AMIA announced it is renaming its DEI Committee to the Empowerment, Engagement & Representation Committee. A move, I believe, to reduce vulnerability in today’s anti-DEI climate.

@IssaKhari Hey fam, I’m Dr. Bright. I’m an assistant professor and my lab works to reduce bias in clinical AI tools and to increase diversity in STEM. I am the first Black woman in the U.S., and from Columbia University, to earn a PhD in biomedical informatics. Excited to be here!
If only I could start every weekend with a publication announcement! 🎉 Big thanks to everyone who made this possible- y’all are the best! Who’s ready to kick off the weekend with some DEI reading? 🤣 https://t.co/X5fG2GD9TX
Thrilled to announce our @JAMIA_Journal article, “The journey to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive AMIA!” 🙌🏾 Grateful to lead this effort with an amazing team. Read it here: [link] #DEI#Informatics#HealthEquity https://t.co/X5fG2GD9TX
There are TWO election ballots for @AMIAinformatics: 9/26-10/14 for Pres-elect and 10/15-11/4 for Directors. Thought my ballot was messed up! 😩 I worry that members might miss their voting opportunity. Thoughts? Election year change...? 🤔 #AMIA2024#VoteInformaticsTwice
@AMIAinformatics members, there are TWO election ballots: 9/26-10/14 for Pres-elect and 10/15-11/4 for Dir. I thought my ballot was messed up! 😩 I get that this gives the Pres-elect another chance to run for Dir, but I worry members might miss their voting opportunity. What do you think of the new sequence? Side note: was this the year for more election rule changes...?🤔 #AMIA2024 #VoteInformaticsTwice

@AMIAinformatics members, take note! There are TWO election ballots this year: Sept 26-Oct 14 for President-elect and Oct 15-Nov 4 for Directors. I thought my ballot was messed up! 😩 I get that this gives the President-elect candidate another chance to run for Director, but I worry the larger issue is that members might miss their voting opportunity. What do you think of the new sequence? Side note: was this the year for more election rule changes...?🤔 #AMIA2024 #VoteInformaticsTwice
