Uncle Ray. Not a real uncle but a great fella when i was growing up.

OTD 1967 ✍️

Today in 1967, Wrexham made a then club record signing with the capture of Ray Smith from Southend United for £8,000.

Ray would go on to spend five seasons at the club, scoring 71 goals and being part of the great 1969/70 promotion winning side.

He was a great player and famously scored at the Kop end at Anfield in front of 54,000, to give Wrexham a shock 1-0 half time lead in the FA Cup in 1970 (see third pic).

Ray lived in Wrexham after his footballing career finished and sadly passed away in the town 5 years ago, aged 77.
