With no connection to other systems apart from (disabled) link to the Republic, NI elec became a standalone industry.

Transport and system operation are 100% state owned, but production and supply are in mixed ownership,

@thomasforth @JP_Biz These “thinking steps” are wrong on the Irish energy sector. Infrastructure and the most significant producers/suppliers are state owned, but private producers/suppliers also participate. So the correct descriptions for Irish electricity and gas should be “mixed”

@mgshanks The market could be restructured to break the link between renewable pricing & the cost of gas. Maybe mandate generator offer prices to be cost-reflective, or introduce zonal pricing that could reflect the negative value of excess generation produced behind a network constraint.

@_PaulMonaghan @mcwilly72 In the context of the Scotland Act, “reserved” means @Scotparl cannot legislate. But why can’t a Government entity just apply to Ofgem for a Gen/Supply/Distribution licence under GB legislation? I’ve done this for a Gen licence myself, so why can’t you do the same?

@WilliamTaborDDS @dorfman_p The idea of instantaneous non-synchronous system penetration facing a hard limit of 25% is well out of date by this stage. Engineers are currently working towards operating a transmission system with 95% non-synchronous gen without loss of reliability.

@rauli_x @dorfman_p All network investment is recovered via the use of system component of retail tariffs, so nothing to do with taxpayers. But do tell about your source for your 3 times claim. Do you mean the specific renewable facility’s connection, wider local or full system assets?

Grid operation is extremely complex, which is why grid operators employ a lot of the smartest people on the planet. The rest of us just make do with whatever knowledge we pick up in our dealings with them.

@MoggyDew @J4m35c4mpb3ll I understand the Spanish system collapse may have been partly due to lack of inertia required to support grid frequency recovery after the big gens tripped. Wind & solar don’t have heavy rotating parts so don’t provide inertia. Solar is DC gen so needs converted to AC to 1/2

Maybe you’re conflating gen tech with rules on instantaneous penetration of non-synchronous gen, which is real & to do with inertia & rate of change of system frequency in event of an outage

@WingsScotland Genius idea to “hit the independence button” to win electoral success shows independence isn’t the party’s core objective. It’s only a cynical grubbing around the salad drawer to find a mouldy carrot to dangle. Is there any plausible way for them to recover their credibility?

@Grouse_Beater Sadly that comes round full circle; to my original comment that things are so politically dire that there is a real temptation just to vote for whoever is likely to do most damage to the establishment structures & hope they succeed. But sense may emerge at the point of voting

@gafordyce @COPFS Maybe it’s just total incompetence by the COPFS management? Maybe they just don’t know how to operate the service effectively? But whether it’s a consequence of malice or incompetence matters little in terms of outcome so personnel changes are required at the top to restore trust
