His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama extended his heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Nena Thurman and family on learning of the passing of his longtime friend, Professor Robert A. F. Thurman.

In his message, His Holiness recalled their warm friendship spanning more than six decades and praised Professor Thurman’s remarkable scholarship, dedication to Tibetan Buddhism, and lifelong efforts to share Tibetan culture and knowledge with the world. His Holiness also acknowledged Professor Thurman’s steadfast support for the Tibetan people and expressed confidence that his legacy of service and compassion will continue to inspire future generations.

His Holiness offered prayers and sympathies to the bereaved family during this difficult time.

He underwent left knee replacement surgery on 8 June and was discharged this morning (12 June).

Medical Update

New Delhi, 12 June - Dr. Rajesh Malhotra, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospitals, said: “His Holiness the Dalai Lama underwent successful left knee replacement surgery on Monday, 8 June, in New Delhi.

“Throughout his treatment, His Holiness’s personal medical team and the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama remained in close coordination with the administrative and medical staff at Apollo Hospitals. His Holiness is stable and expected to make full recovery. He was discharged on Friday morning, 12 June.

“It has been a great honour for the hospital and the medical team to serve His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We are grateful for the trust and confidence placed in us and privileged to have been able to contribute to His Holiness’s care.”
