Apart from being yet another UNESCO world heritage site, it was once famous for silver mining and the statue of El Pípila sits atop the city, offering a nice view over the entire valley
The afternoon of day 13 as well as day 14 were spent in Guanajuato city, the capital of Guanajuato state. This city, while similar to San Miguel de Allende in that it is located on a hill, is considerably bigger than it.
It also hosts a maze of different tunnels which were once used to route the river "Rio Guanajuato". These days however, the tunnels are used to divert half the car traffic from the city center.
Day 13: After having spent the night in San Miguel de Allende, we visited the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, a church and UNESCO world heritage site together with San Miguel de Allende.
Later that day, we went to see San Miguel de Allende, a town situated on a mountain for which the center is named UNESCO World heritage for its Mexican baroque. It also hosts a considerable amount of foreign (mostly US-American) artists living here after retiring in the USA.
Day 12: We took our rental to explore the city of Dolores Hidalgo where pastor Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed the cry of hidalgo ("grito del Hidalgo") which initiated the independence war of the Mexicans against the Spanish #doloreshidalgo
For the following days, we went to explore the neighboring state of Guanajuato where we visited Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel de Allende, and Guanajuato city.
