Competition is the enemy of science and progress.
Mental health MUST be protected, not damaged.
Work ethics and people respect are NOT NEGOTIABLE.

Postdoc time is often harder than PhD.

You have little time. Competition is higher. And you MUST stand out.

+ Your contract may end any moment.

+ Your salary is often low (for your age/education).

+ You’ve just relocated and prepare to relocate again.

No wonder that Max Planck Society survey showed that depression and anxiety of postdocs is rising.

Interestingly, Max Planck Institutes have substantial internal funding. So, in theory there should be less pressure to apply for grants, and everyone should be enjoying science. And yet the pressure on postdocs is immense.

📍 Many postdocs want to stay in academia.

They want to apply for faculty positions or become senior scientists.

Some of them achieve it. Others don’t.

“I was really scared of my supervisor”.

30 scientists from MPI were interviewed across Germany. Many of them hide their faces.

Many of them described abusive behavior and toxic work environments. The vast majority were afraid to report the misconduct due to consequences.

📌Here’s the key points from the DW video:

1⃣ Many stories start similarly:

First, a student meets the big professor (director) at a conference and is thrilled to be invited for a PhD into their lab. Then, after arriving to a new place, the student finds that the advisor’s charm has faded away.

The student spends all time on research. One day, the student came to the director’s office to update on the paper.

While hitting his table, the advisor yelled “You arrived here almost a year ago. You have done s..t, you’re not working at all, you’re f.. useless.”

Others describe the same. One important point - the director behaved this way only when they were alone.

“It took me more than a year to heal from it - to stop dreaming about it.

2⃣ Some students said they had severe depression and needed medical attention.

3⃣ Unfortunately MPI seems to not take it seriously.

Official statement by the Max Planck Society:

“Mr. [Director] cannot confirm that he made the statements”

4⃣ Women face more challenges.

“There were project meetings where no women were invited to attend. It was so typical that it became normal for us.”

“I would be excluded from the discussion of my project. Sometimes, others would claim my work for theirs.”

📍I've been saying it all along.

Please, please, please!

Do DUE DILIGENCE when selecting a PhD advisor:

1. Pay attention to what current group members say. Ask alumni. Talk to students from neighboring groups.

2. If you’re an international student, be extra careful. Since your visa is bound to your job contract, the advisor may have more power over you than over the locals.

3. Interview your advisor! Ask questions. Probe their policies and approaches. Explore before signing the contract!

❗Remember:

PhD can be an amazing experience.

Bur it’s better to decline a PhD than to join a soul-crushing environment.

A position at top research institutes is NOT worth it.
