California is a mess and Xavier Becerra still had to be dragged onto a debate stage despite saying he wants the job to fix the state. Steve Hilton had been calling him out for weeks. Becerra finally said yes. That tells you how safe Becerra thinks the seat is and how uninterested he is in telling the public his vision for the Golden State.

He’ll meet Hilton Sept. 30 on CNN in Burbank, with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderating, for one hour, right before mail ballots go out. That’s ridiculous. Californians deserve better than this tiny appearance.

An August UC Berkeley poll had Becerra up 55 to 38. California is expensive and badly run, and too many voters don’t demand an argument, so Becerra doesn’t bother making one.

California needs a governor who will show up, explain the record, and present common-sense solutions. Hilton wanted the opportunity. Becerra only agreed because hiding was starting to cost him politically. Put both men on the stage and make them make their case. That’s California’s only chance.

The juror here says she went into deliberations thinking Clancy was guilty but switched to not guilty because it was “the only way Lindsay would get the help she needs.” She’s openly admitting she disregarded the law. Jurors are not supposed to be making decisions based on those kinds of calculations. They were there to judge whether Clancy was guilty or not. Period. Their job was not the ensure the Clancy “gets the help she needs.” What a farce.
