I just realized why recent remarks from Europe and Canada sound so familiar. Trump has introduced them to the same "Do what we say, or else" politics they have subjected Africa to for years.
Like us, they now have to explain their political choices, justify their security concerns, and defend their sovereignty to people who couldn’t care less. And they are struggling.
The post-World War II international order they created allowed them to deal with each other based on shared interests and mutual respect.
But when it comes to us, their approach is entirely conditional and transactional, allowing them to extract, control, and dictate, under the illusion of a "value-based international system." When we ‘deviate’ from their interests, we get sanctions, military interventions, and isolation.
For example, Canada and some European countries, which have extensive mining interests in Eastern Congo, recently sanctioned Rwanda to maintain a cordial, transactional relationship with the genocidal regime in Kinshasa.
They have detailed intelligence on the massacres of Congolese Tutsi communities by Kinshasa-backed armed groups, as well as the growing threat of the FDLR against Rwanda. It’s ironic to hear them cry about their "existential threats" when they behave like this with ours.
The international order we experience has always been driven by power, not principles. Trump is simply engaging with it on its own terms—and applying those dynamics to them.
If they want to know how to respond when intimidated, we have lessons to offer them on defiance, unity, homegrown solutions, and agaciro.
