MORE THAN A THIRD of social workers are not trained on coercive control. Not only is this unfathomable, it is insulting to the countless victim’s who go unseen and unheard, their lives readily being put at risk.

Coercive and controlling behaviour is the very bedrock of domestic abuse and a leading indicator towards an escalation of violence. From stalking, to economic abuse, post-separation abuse, sexual violence, to murder and domestic abuse-related suicide, coercive control is the insidious thread that binds these abusive acts together.

Simply put, if social workers are not trained to spot coercive control, they are not fit, nor safe, to be social workers.

I have lived in a world without coercive control laws and seen my family bear the brunt of a horrific outcome because of it. Yet, I still campaign for awareness with the belief that had such laws existed for my family, and many other survivor’s, things would be different. However, findings like this today shed a disturbing light on the failure by those whose duty it is to safeguard and protect individuals and families.

There is no excuse to not to be stopping the cycle of violence, there are enough dead victims and victim’s who have survived for us to learn this by now.
