I shared this negotiation strategy in 2023. Sharing again.
Two steps:
1. Pretend you didn’t have the full cash. Agree a payment plan of say 6 - 12 months. Negotiate fully and get as much general discount as possible. Seal the payment plan and pay deposit as required.
2. Go back after few days or weeks and say “Oga, you know what? I want to squeeze myself and empty my savings and possibly even borrow from friends to just pay the balance at a go, rather than over 6 -12 months. It’s not convenient but I just want to get this transaction closed. But I will like to request that you knock off N3m from the balance. Not convenient for me, but I may be able to run around and raise the funds within a week”
Most sellers will agree with this, having put their mind in receiving the balance in piecemeal over 6-12 months, now they want to give you at once. They may not give you the entire discount amount you asked for, but it works in high value transaction.
A friend I taught this negotiation strategy saved N8.5m in a purchase in 2023.

There was a time when Awúrébé music echoed loudly through the streets of Ibadan, Lagos and Abeokuta. At the center of that golden era stood the legendary Akanmu Ade-Eyọ Epo Àkàrà, a man many people believe gave Awúrébé music its identity, voice and wider popularity.
Epo Àkàrà was more than a musician. He was a storyteller, a praise singer and a custodian of culture. With the sound of his mouth organ, the harmonica, he turned ordinary stories into unforgettable music. His songs spoke about life, people, wisdom and society in ways that connected deeply with the streets and the common man, oderengbo is my favorite.
His fame travelled far beyond Ibadan. From Lagos to Abeokuta, Awúrébé music became a movement of its own, and at one point he was even said to have shared stages with the legendary Ayinla Omowura in Lagos.
Like many great legends, his journey was filled with both triumph and hardship. There was a period he had a clash with a feared area boy known as Eli, a notorious figure remembered for attacking musicians. The experience later inspired the popular line “Élì ṣe ohun tó dùn mí," by one of his victim, but Epo Akaaa was his last attempt(story for another day). Yet through it all, Epo Àkàrà remained loved for his talent, charisma and ability to praise and celebrate important figures of his time.
Then came one of the darkest moments of his life, a terrible accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that reportedly claimed the lives of some members of his crew. Out of that pain came the emotional album Ìjàmbá Mọ́tò. Those close to him said the memories were so painful that he rarely listened to the song himself after recording it.
There was also a time he travelled to Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire and stayed away for long, leading to rumours and mockery from rivals who claimed he had been arrested over smuggling allegations. One of such rivalries reportedly involved Mosudi, father of Saheed Osupa. But like the true artist he was, Epo Àkàrà answered not with violence, but with music, replying with the words: “Kò rí fún ọ bí èrò ọkàn rẹ sí mi.”
Another painful chapter was his fallout with his protégé, Sulaiman Asa-n-ke, whose tiny soprano voice many believed could have taken Awúrébé music to even greater heights.
Today, despite the years and the struggles, the legacy of Epo Àkàrà still lives on. His daughter, Suliya Amoke Epo Àkàrà, alongside Ramoni and Tawa Epo Àkàrà, continues to keep the spirit of Awúrébé alive for a new generation.
May Awúrébé music never fade.
May the legacy of Epo Àkàrà continue to shine across generations.
And may his children rise even beyond the greatness of their father.

Uber driver arrived but there was a mixup so it took me like 10 mins to go down. When I got to the parking lot, I met him behind the wheel reading something that looked like a university handout material. I was curious because I hadn’t seen something like that in a while.
