Watch Actions, Not Words

One lesson stayed with me long after I left intelligence. People tell you who they want to be. Their actions tell you who they are. That applies to individuals, governments, terrorist organizations, and even allies.

Public statements are often made to shape perceptions. Actions reveal priorities. If you want to understand what matters to someone, don't start with what they say. Start with where they spend their time, resources, and attention.

Now, how to actually apply this:

The next time a world leader makes a major announcement, don't ask whether you agree with the statement.

Ask whether their actions over the past year support it.

Actions are often the more honest form of communication. For example, the United States did not designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a whole as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). Instead, only the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood received that designation this year. Looking at the government's actual action tells a different story than the released talking points.
