@thematidog@WR4NYGov@HamasAtrocities He's leader of a very small far right racist and anti-semitic political party, which has almost no support in Ireland.
He's beyond extreme, way off the bell curve.
@JunusAnna@Glinner@SageDespatches@michaeljknowles I wouldn't agree with that in any way. I agree with the Pope's spiritual compassion for trans people - but equally, I'd share temporal concerns such as the one you refer to.
@Redacte20094317@Glinner@SageDespatches@michaeljknowles I checked, and that was the expression Pope Francis used. I think he wanted to demonstrate compassion first and foremost over all else, which I think is a good approach by a Pope-I'm happy to take my lead from him...having said that, I do agree with you that gender is relevant.
@SweatieAngle Sorry bout the ridiculous pile on - 99% of your Irish cousins would totally get what you mean - but the unrepresenitive 1% who'd prefer to get up on their high horse about everything seem to have taken over Irish Twitter!
@Frank_Connolly_ The PIRA campaign lasting 10 times longer than the WoI, meant that it lost most of the tacit support it once had in the south, well before the end, as the human cost mounted.
Also, PIRA viewed the southern state, incl. guards and soldiers as enemies, which appalled southerns.
@RobLooseCannon@keeper_irish That's very fair + balanced.
I think though, with the Church being so powerful,Dev needed McQuaid's endorsement to get the public to buy in to the Constitution-at least it recognised religious minorities, esp. Judaism, given what was happening in Europe, against McQuaid's wishes
@workmansflopera@thejournal_ie There's every chance she is as appalled as you are about what's been happening in Gaza. As an 82 yo survivor of the Holocaust, personally I think you should show her more respect, even if her definition of genocide might not appear to be the same as yours.
The findings could not be clearer
The Irish had been left to their own devices for some 3000 years
This is unsurprising for an island outcrop on Europes western edge, before the advent of ocean seafaring
One that avoided Roman & Saxon interests
They were not isolated - they traded and talked, bought and borrowed
The Celts inspired
The Roman religion of Christianity was keenly embraced
But the Irish identity we know today was an internal evolution of culture & values - a self established, all island society that would resist later efforts at ehtnocide - and still seeks refinement today (13)
@ionainstitute That graph shows a big increase after the introduction of divorce in 1995, sustained until the height of the boom, before falling noticeably since then.
@Foxexpresstime@243_cal@IrelandAmbUSA@IrelandEmbUSA Nollaig na mBan is something that stretches so far back in the mists of time here in Cork and Kerry, that I'm surprised it's not also a tradition in Ulster and the other provinces.
