@GianmarcoSoresi the sense I got from listening to writers talk about math is that somewhere between a third and half of them carry trauma about their algebra teachers well into their fifties. so you can imagine that sometimes, teaching calc, you have to do some aftercare.
@policytensor Tangent: given how the us performs its geopolitical thinking mostly through think tanks, I think one can reasonably argue that Iran cannot consider the US deterred until "serious policy wonks" agree the US is defeated. In this context, how can Iran agree to a deal at all?
@CantEverDie this seems to be the case and it bothers me. the power and community destruction would happen with almost any industrial development, not just AI, no? to avoid that we'd need state capacity stuff you won't fix by focusing just on AI. solar, environmental regulations, research…
@CarlZha democratic party primary only includes democrats. women with somewhat conservative opinions are more likely to be democrats than men with somewhat conservative opinions. just because of self interest. so they're over-represented.
@ryangrim It's also good news for China, since they last month inaugurated the Iron Silk Road, with the arrival in Tehran of the first cargo train from Xi'an. It looks like this plan of theirs to build a way to deliver cargo to Europe without going through the South China Sea may work out.
@TheStalwart ...isn't that normal? Looking at other systems and seeing what works for you? Idk, if I see someone extolling the virtues of public transportation in NYC or w/e, I wouldn't take it as necessitating by default a total endorsement of NYC politics
@NuryVittachi i am stuck trying to visualize what a mediation olympics could look like. it seems like it would be very hard for the competitors not to come out all being winners? (no but seriously, someone give me a link, i want to learn more)
@BenjaminNorton took a bit to find, but the methodology involved is informative:
- the polling is from shortly after L day, so that effect is in there
- the methodology is biased towards online respondents. they correct for gender and age but that seems not enough
- sample sizes could be bigger
@GlennLuk Hm. Fair enough, I suppose I must be confused. Thanks for taking the time to answer, I'm just a curious amateur trying to understand these things 😅
@GlennLuk Most of the costs are in "Cost of goods sold and selling, general, and administrative expenses" though. It seems, at least, that we can say that these specific figures aren't that indicative. (Despite that I think the case for China's advantage in this conflict is pretty strong.)
@GlennLuk I think the figures from the rapid-response whitepaper might be wrong? I hunted down the BEA data it used, and it looks like they were looking at MNE Income rather than Net Income. The money repatriated to the US is the Net, after expenses incurred in China, yes?
