In 1914, he founded the Ogboni society: Reverend T. A. J. Ogunbiyi, O.B.E

I’ve postponed this post too many a times cos I didn’t have some details I needed.

I now have those details.

I decided to find out more and what I found is one of the most interesting stories in Lagos history.

His name is Reverend and Honourable T. A. J. Ogunbiyi, O.B.E.

The photo you are seeing was taken when he was already over 80 years old.

The caption says he still took a very active part in the religious and political life of Lagos.

He was born in Lagos in 1866, Thomas Adesina Jacobson Ogunbiyi.

He became a teacher and a priest in the Anglican Church.

In 1890 he was posted to Ondo as the first official teacher there, and he single handedly revived formal education at St. Stephen's Anglican Primary School.

By 1921 he had risen to become Archdeacon of Lagos. That alone made him one of the most powerful church men in Nigeria at the time.

3. In 18th December 1914, he did something that shocked both the British and the church.

He founded the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity.

He originally called it Ogboni Onigbagbo, which means The Ogboni Fraternity of the Christians.

Think about that. A top Anglican Archdeacon, founding an Ogboni society. For him, it was not about returning to idol worship.

It was about saying, a Christian Yoruba man does not have to abandon his culture to be a good Christian.

Educated Lagos men were caught between a colonial church that rejected their blackness and a traditional society they were drifting away from. He wanted to bridge that gap.

That decision still causes debate till today.

Because of his influence, the British made him a member of the Legislative Council of Nigeria in 1936. He was among that small group of African elites who sat at the table with the colonial government and spoke for Lagos.

He travelled wide. He visited Jerusalem. And in 1947 he served as a Nigerian member of the Colonial Conference in London. During that trip he visited Buckingham Palace and was received by His Majesty The King.

The British gave him the OBE, the Order of the British Empire, for his service. And in Lagos he was known for one thing above all: kindness and generosity.

So this is not just an old man in traditional cloth.

This is a priest, a teacher, a politician, a cultural reformer, and a philanthropist. All in one life.

A man who tried to prove that you can be a devout Christian, a proud Yoruba man, and a Nigerian leader at the same time.

That is why they still call him the Reverend and Honourable, even in old age.

Honestly, I know it’s going to be a comical day whenever I see this man. What pains me is that some of you still don’t understand the bigger agenda. By the time the consequences become obvious, the damage may be too deep to reverse.

Ultimately, Yorubaland has a lot to lose. Hardline religious ideologues from outside are gaining influence within Muslim communities across Yorubaland, and I fear they will stop at nothing to undermine our traditional institutions and cultural identity.

As usual, some of you without foresight will dismiss this as nothing. I don’t expect everyone in the comments to exercise common sense. One day, the implications will become clear to everyone.

NOTICE PURPORTS TO DECLARE DETHRONEMENT OF OLUWO OF IWO, OBA ABDULROSHEED AKANBI

A notice dated October 24, 2026, and attributed to Dr Takinlade Kehinde Samuel Akintoye has declared the purported traditional dethronement of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, also known as Telu I, and announced the withdrawal of his royal privileges.

The notice accuses the monarch of undermining Yoruba cultural heritage through his public utterances, altercations with fellow traditional rulers, alleged desecration of his crown in public and criticism of ancestral traditions linked to Ile-Ife.

The purported decree lists several sanctions, including a permanent ban on sitting on the throne of Iwo, a prohibition on wearing the royal crown and regalia, and the withdrawal of authority to preside over meetings of the Iwo Traditional Council or represent the traditional institution.

It also threatens spiritual consequences against the monarch, his spouse, children and anyone who supports his defiance of the declaration, invoking God, Allah and Olodumare.

The document was issued in the name of HIMES Aare Gbogbo Oba Ile Oodua Atewonro Orunto Odidimade and identifies Dr Takinlade Kehinde Samuel Akintoye as its issuer.

I have initiated a comprehensive statewide security and surveillance project in partnership with a Chinese firm, Hefei Shengwen Information Technology Company Limited to strengthen security and protect lives and property across Osun State.

At a meeting with the company’s delegation led by Mr Cai Jianfei, Director of International Operations, we discussed plans for the deployment of modern security technologies, including drones, radar systems, artificial intelligence-enabled cameras, robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, all integrated into a central Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring across the state.

The project will cover schools, hospitals, banks, industries, farms, mining sites, commercial centres, motor parks and border communities. It will also feature a Safe School Project and a mobile application that will enable citizens to connect directly with the Command and Control Centre.

Building on our establishment of the Osun State Security Trust Fund, this initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging modern technology to strengthen our security architecture and ensure the safety of our people and businesses.

Our goal is to build an inclusive security system that protects every community and makes Osun State safer for all.

Father and Son both Medical Doctors.

Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki, on the left in white, was born May 17, 1933 in Ilorin.

He first attended Breadfruit Memorial School in Lagos, then Eko Boys High School. Because the school did not offer science at that time, he finished at Reverend Lucas College, Lagos. He then travelled to England for his higher studies.

He attended Regent Street Polytechnic and Woolwich Polytechnic for his A levels between 1952 and 1953, then entered the University of London from 1956 to 1959. He completed his clinical training at St George's Hospital Medical School, London, graduating as a House Surgeon in 1962.

He also obtained the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians and Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, England.

On his return to Nigeria, he worked as a medical officer at the General Hospital Lagos and Creek Hospital Onikan, Lagos.

He later left government service and started a private hospital with his colleague the late Dr Ikomi, the Saraki Ikomi Hospital on Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos, which stood for over fifty years.

In 1979, he was elected Senator for Kwara Central in the Second Republic and became Senate Leader under the National Party of Nigeria.

His son, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, born December 19, 1962 in London, followed the same medical path.

He attended Corona School Victoria Island Lagos, then King's College Lagos from 1973 to 1978. He went to Cheltenham College in the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1981 for his High School Certificate.

He then entered London Hospital Medical College of the University of London from 1982 to 1987 where he obtained his M.B.B.S London. After that he worked as a medical officer at Rush Green Hospital, Essex, and as Senior Casualty Officer at the Royal Free Hospital, London, before returning to Nigeria in 1989.

He later became Special Assistant on Budget to President Obasanjo, then Governor of Kwara from 2003 to 2011, Senator, and from 2015 to 2019, the 13th President of the Nigerian Senate.
