Bear 122 — “The Boss”

He is the most dominant grizzly in Banff National Park’s recorded history. Weighing between 650 and 700 pounds, Bear 122 earned his name through decades of unchallenged authority over a home range exceeding 2,500 square kilometres across Banff and Kootenay National Parks.

He has killed rival male bears, eaten a black bear, and survived being struck by a train. DNA evidence attributes roughly 70% of grizzly cubs in the Bow Valley to him, making him the genetic backbone of the region’s entire grizzly population.

Now in his mid-to-late twenties, well beyond the typical lifespan of a wild grizzly, he continues to hold his ground.
