Drug poisoning deaths are down in BC AGAIN!

BC Coroners Service data is out for March, and once again, we’re looking at a slight decrease in deaths over the same month last year (NOT a 380% increase, fyi)

Deaths in March 2024 are down 11% from March 2023. That’s the fourth month in a row of year-over-year decreases.

The provincial death rate for 2024 is currently 40.3/100K (down from 46.2 in 2023)

It was still an unacceptably high number of preventable deaths: 192 people died in March — from unregulated fentanyl, meth & cocaine laced with benzodiazepines, nitazenes, xylazine and other chemicals found in the illicit drug supply.

👉 THEY DID NOT DIE FROM DECRIMINALIZATION❗️

In fact, these improving outcomes are likely THANKS to a combo of harm reduction programs like safer supply, decrim, supervised consumption, drug testing AND improved access to treatment & recovery programs.

But it becomes more evident every day that the loudest voices in this conversation REALLY DON’T CARE about saving lives and reducing harms. They don’t even care about “public safety”!!

If they did, they would support the measures that are working 👇

⚠️ If you don’t want to see public consumption, set up overdose prevention sites
⚠️ If you don’t want people to die from tainted illicit drugs, provide safer alternatives
⚠️ If you want people to admit to their substance use and seek support & treatment, remove criminal penalties for possession

But they don’t. Because despite all signs pointing to THESE THINGS WORKING …

We still have the moral entrepreneurs, political strategists, opinion writers, lobbyists, and politicians trying to OUT YELL each other about the “wacko” policies … THAT APPEAR TO BE HELPING PEOPLE 🙄
