I've sometimes wondered the extent to which reason can help in the fight for personal mental health. Obviously reason cannot completely overwhelm and conquer feelings. But if a person has negative or delusional thoughts, isn't it sometimes helpful to recognize that these thoughts are irrational, even if the person continues to feel them?

If you're feeling depressed and catastrophizing, for example, thinking you will "always" feel that way, isn't it at least marginally helpful to "know" that you felt that way in the past but were later happy? And if the thoughts are overwhelming, isn't it helpful to "know" that you need to seek help NOW? I suspect that all these drugs sometimes block this rational faculty. Didn't John Nash and even Nicola Tesla learn to battle delusions through reason and acts of the will?

Having said that, as a lawyer, I've met a small number of people who were completely disconnected to reality. In that case they need others to seek an intervention. If that can't happen, then, yes, accountability strictly speaking may not be a "thing."
