Had a great discussion earlier this week on @NewBooksNetwork with @ChristineKooi (@HistoryLsu) about her new book on the Reformation in the Low Countries from @cambUP_History. Give it a listen! https://t.co/5LaypaBsbi
Hey @evelinedesmalen @CornellPress does great work. You might enjoy: "In This Together" The press is also giving everyone a chance to #PWYW2023 right now. Looking forward to discussing some recent publications from the press later this month on New Books.
The marker above notes the camp was renamed Schattenberg and makes positive comments about Indonesian food. It says nothing about the living conditions they faced for 20 years.
Yesterday my wife and I cycled from Assen to Camp Westerbork in the northern Netherlands. This was a transit camp for Jews and other Nazi victims who were sent from the Netherlands to Nazi death camps. Along the path, we came across a monument to a downed British Lancaster.
They were transported to the Netherlands with their families as a temporary measure; until it was safe for them to return. However, they were placed in isolated camps including Westerbork and lived there in poor conditions until the 1970s.
Hilda van Stockum wrote children's books about the resistance from her home in Long Island. In researching, she exchanged letters with former resistance members and a number of women. The collection may help shed more light women in the resistance. https://t.co/DxnySSXIuP
American soldiers being "knighted" to hunt Germany. Today a celebration, but from 1945 to 1948, it was a highly political debate about what "democratic hunting" looked like (see my dissertation). The "knighting" should tell you who won. Thanks @gharward. https://t.co/QO5N1wRjfm
Dutch universities are concerned that Chinese postgraduate students may not just be here for the stroopwafels. A deal that was financially too good to turn down – a 100% state-funded scholarship programme – turns out to have a high hidden cost. https://t.co/fHUo2IaOxt
