As someone who has taught reading intervention, I’m pretty quiet on the reading wars except to say that when you use the term “war” you will end up with casualties. You’ll dehumanize. You’ll create enemies in a way that prevents dialogue.
Phonics matter. Blending matters. Stories matter. Prior knowledge matters. Helping kids fall in loving with reading matters.
I want to see kids read. I’m not interested in warfare.

Implementing task-based math instruction. Students collaborating on tasks involving fractions using physical manipulative, representational modeling and using video to explain the process. We use observations and conversations to drive our whole group lesson.

Very thankful and proud that my school district @Naperville203 is taking on a very real and very deep rooted system of racism and inequity. @DenaSimmons spoke hard truths that we needed to hear. We weren’t shamed, we weren’t reprimanded, we were inspired and challenged.
