We already know it’s not true. The origin of the Mormon Church is well documented. We know for a fact that Joseph Smith pretended to translate some Egyptian funerary papyri as a book of Abraham. So even if the gold plates were real, there’s no way Joseph Smith properly translated them. But in spite of the witness testimony, they probably weren’t real. Or they were something stolen from a Masonic temple.
