Today, @ICRWAfrica Africa paid a courtesy call to the state Department for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports to share key findings from the Behind the Scenes (BtS): Young Women and Gender-Based Inequities in Africa’s Creative Sector project.
The engagement provided an important platform to discuss the realities facing young women creatives in Kenya and explore opportunities for evidence-based policies, collaboration, and action towards a more inclusive and equitable creative economy.
Together, we are turning research into action to ensure every young creative has the opportunity to thrive.

The conversations were powerful shedding light on:
✅ What works for women in social protection
✅ Bold reforms to reach those most in need
✅ Practical strategies for accountability, inclusion, and impact
Gratitude to our speakers, panelists, and participants who made today’s dialogue so enriching.
Now the real work begins: turning evidence into action. Social protection must recognize and respond to women’s realities in care, work, and resilience if we are to achieve transformative change.
👉 How is your organization ensuring social protection systems work for women? We’d love to hear your reflections.

“Uganda’s #SRHR policies promise protection for students, women, and children, yet weak enforcement and legal loopholes leave many at risk. Inconsistent implementation undermines progress, exposing vulnerable groups to GBV, inadequate reproductive healthcare, and systemic neglect. Urgent reforms are needed to close these gaps and ensure laws translate into real protections”.

“Africa takes pride in being a young continent, with over 75% of its population being youth. Yet, it remains rhetorical to celebrate this demographic while failing to address their reproductive health needs.”

Today, @ICRWAfrica convened a 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 (𝐓𝐀𝐆) Meeting to review research protocols, methodology, and implementation plans. The workshop brings together policymakers, researchers, NGOs, development partners, and women owned childcare enterprise representatives to address knowledge gaps in Kenya’s childcare sector.
Focusing on Nairobi, Kisumu, and Vihiga counties, this initiative aims to generate high-quality data and actionable solutions to improve childcare accessibility, affordability, and quality.
Most existing childcare policies and acts focus more on facilities than the 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦.It is crucial to adopt a holistic approach that prioritizes 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
because safe spaces mean little without nurturing care.
Strengthening childcare services is key to advancing 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲.

Gender-based violence remains persistently high in the country, despite years of interventions, programming, and policy efforts aimed at reducing its prevalence. The statistics we have barely scratch the surface what’s reported is just the tip of the iceberg. Stigma and fear prevent many survivors from speaking out, making the true scale of the issue even more alarming.
#SRHR and gender equity aren’t just trends or funding priorities they are urgent community needs that demand action.
Let’s continue advocating for a world where everyone has access to the care and rights they deserve.

“Women’s economic empowerment and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are deeply interconnected. Without control over their bodies and reproductive choices, women face significant barriers to full participation in the economy. In Uganda, one in four married women lacks decision-making power over her health, finances, and mobility limiting her economic independence. Unpaid care work, often invisible in economic policies, continues to subsidize economies, yet remains undervalued. Achieving true economic justice requires integrating SRHR into economic policies, ensuring that women can fully engage in and benefit from the marketplace”.
~@amwaafrika
“Uganda’s #SRHR landscape neglects key groups, leaving adolescent girls & young women vulnerable to GBV, teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, and inadequate reproductive healthcare. Weak healthcare financing and over-reliance on development partners have led to policies that fail to address sexual and domestic violence within universal health coverage. Urgent action is needed to bridge these gaps and protect vulnerable populations”.
~@Lasterbosire
Addressing Uganda’s #SRHR gaps requires more than policies on paper. It demands sustainable healthcare financing, stronger legal frameworks, and inclusive solutions that prioritize neglected groups. No young woman or girl should be left behind.
