Lately I've been seeing a lot of hype around quantum computing on this platform. Are those bots or humans? Either way, what I'm seeing is concerning. I want to provide an honest perspective on the current status quo, which is hopefully useful. Long story short, I do think a lot of exciting progress on QC will be made over the next few years. But I doubt those progress will be commercial applications.
@DavidLammy: @Keir_Starmer yesterday ruling out common market or cust union "in his lifetime" lost you my vote today. Joining those (not EU) helps fix broken economy+NI. Maybe not viable now. But ruling out irrespective of future circs=blatant populist vote-chasing, not pm worthy
Churchill's aspirational words still hold true today more than ever. ❤🇪🇺
"Men will be proud to say 'I am a European'. We hope to see a day when men of every country will think as much of being a European as of being from their native land". #IamEuropean
The @UCLCS quantum information theory group is hiring postdocs! #UCLQ#UCL If you're interested in working with Lluis Masanes and myself on...well, almost anything quantum really, from algorithms to many-body physics, apply here: https://t.co/dpJSxRDidb
@thegautamkamath Connes embedding conjecture (a question in pure mathematics about von Neumann algebras) is equivalent to Tsirelson’s problem (a question about whether two mathematical models of quantum entanglement are equal).
@quantumashley @muggleraph @andreweckford@BristOliver That was my 2.5yo daughter's insightful comment on this discussion. I suspect it gives a concise proof that P in DTIME(n^2.5), but the notation is a bit advanced for me.
OMG! If https://t.co/ASbvhdsICy posted to the @arxiv today by Ji, Natarajan, Vidick, Wright and Yuen checks out, it's HUGE: a quantum-complexity-theoretic refutation of the Connes embedding conjecture - one of biggest open problems in von Neumann algebras for well over 30 years.
There's a nice & more accessible (at least if you're a mathematician/quantum info theorist but not an expert in von Neumann algebras!) intro from coauthor Thomas Vidick in the Notices of the AMS: https://t.co/TkNP4hfC9i (thanks to another coauthor @henryquantum for the link.)
@thegautamkamath Sure! Since I’m the only (active) person on Twitter from our team (so far), I guess I’ll say something short :-). Basically, there is a really remarkable set of connections involved: pure math <=> foundations of quantum mechanics => complexity theory. 1/n
Conservative party donors, backing Brexit but at the same time seeking EU citizenship via Cyprus. Pardon my French but ordinary British citizens are being screwed over by their elite.

@muggleraph @BristOliver Only survey I could find is on the opposite question: a Yougov poll commissioned by @hopenothate on fear of Islam amongst conservative voters https://t.co/WMnPUaMdTN
@muggleraph @BristOliver My impression, as outsider to both, is there is very justifiable fear from both Jewish & Muslim communities of current trends in UK, with neither main party trusted to address it. Well-documented upswing in racially-&religiously-motivated hate crime shows this to be well-founded.
@muggleraph @BristOliver Not aware of any surveys (which obv isn't to say there aren't any: refs welcome!). But Muslim Council of Britain has released statements on "palpable sense of fear" of life under Johnson gov: https://t.co/lJm12t5LFs
The election gives BJ the freedom to extend the transition, and to align UK & EU rules, if he wants to. He will probably do this, since leaving the transition without an FTA would be painful for the economy. He can take on ERG since he is master of his party. A thread. @CER_EU /1
@BristOliver The fresh tang of chlorine really adds a certain je ne sais quoi to a Sunday roast. And since they say the NHS belongs to us (the public), I'm looking forward to pocketing my share when it's sold to Trump.
