After some reflection I have concluded that Emergency Care in the UK has never before been under the constant, unrelenting pressure as it is now. Every shift feels like a struggle (and I’ve been doing it a while). How do you keep yourself positive on shift (and after)?
I went a bit quiet at the end of #NUHMedEd23!
Fantastic talk from Prof Claire Sharpe.
Showed NUH CEO the fantastic work of doctors, ACPs and students at UoN and NUH. Enthusiasm and engagement from the audience.
Thank you to my organising team! @NUHPMED
UMED and PMED awards at #NUHMedEd23… Great to see so many of our medical students, junior doctors and educators providing outstanding education and care.
“For one so small you make a lot of noise. I was marginalised in a single phrase.”
Being reminded to be inclusive, fight against differential attainment and challenging harassment by Mrs Morris & @Dr_WilkinCrowe#NUHMedEd23
Such a challenging question on differential attainment from @Dr_WilkinCrowe and Mrs Louise Morris - followed by the privilege walk!
Easy to see how so many of us have privileges that others don’t.

“We all have aspects of our personal and professional roles that we choose to share and not share in different settings”
One symbol can be taken in such different ways by patients - thanks @RCullum91#NUHMedEd23
@edocsojo We’re having a fantastic workshop on bystander training and the 5Ds model.
Nurses are way ahead of the curve on this - doctors slowly catching up.
Great group discussions - now to develop a curriculum, workshops, SIMs…
“Well you’re gay so it must be an STD” - an example of discrimination leading to misdiagnosis through incorrect preconceptions.
@NicJMiller1 teaching us a new 5Ds model for calling it out in the healthcare setting.

@edocsojo Great qu from @edocsojo about how to find and protect the time:
20 hours currently spent on other mandatory training. Scratch that.
Only 9 x 90 minutes / year needed
We have to, if for no other reason than to improve huge sickness rates! If we don’t do it, the workforce suffers.
@ClareGerada A prescription - 90 minutes 9x year for teams to meet and give support to each other. Fantastic advice for how to tackle burnout.
And a positive ending “Most doctors thrive in their jobs.”
