Got denied for a credit card today?
There's a phone number you can call in the next 30 days that reverses about half of all denials
The bank doesn't advertise it because that would defeat the entire purpose of the algorithm
But every major American bank has a reconsideration line, a manual underwriter on standby, and a script that works on them
Here's what actually happens when you get denied online:
You submit an application. The bank's algorithm pulls your credit, scores you against 40-60 internal variables, and either approves or denies in 30-90 seconds. Roughly 35-45% of business card applications get denied at the algorithm level even when the applicant has a 720+ FICO
The denial isn't final. It's the algorithm's vote
There's a second vote available, but only if you ask for it
Every major issuer has a reconsideration department staffed by senior credit analysts whose entire job is to review denied applications and approve the ones that should have been approved. These analysts have authority to override the algorithm. They have access to data the algorithm doesn't (your account history, your relationship with the bank, your ability to articulate your business model)
The numbers (public, listed on every credit card forum, none of this is secret):
Chase Reconsideration Line: 1-888-270-2127 (personal) / 1-800-453-9719 (business)
Amex Reconsideration: 1-800-567-1083
Capital One Reconsideration: 1-800-625-7866
Citi Reconsideration: 1-800-695-5171
US Bank Reconsideration: 1-800-947-1444
Bank of America Reconsideration: 1-866-458-8805
Call within 30 days of denial. Call between 10am and 4pm in the bank's headquarters time zone (the recon team works business hours, not the 24-hour fraud line)
The script that works:
Step 1: "Hi, I just received a denial on my application for [specific card name]. I'd like to request reconsideration. Can you help me with that?"
Step 2: they pull up your application. They tell you the official denial reason (too many recent inquiries, too low business revenue, too short business history, etc.)
Step 3: address the specific reason. Examples:
"Too many recent inquiries" → "I understand. Those inquiries were for cards I needed to consolidate my business banking relationships. I'm not planning to apply for additional credit in the next 6 months. I'd like to focus my business spend on Chase products specifically because of your reward structure"
"Insufficient business revenue" → "The application asked for projected revenue, which I provided conservatively. My current trailing 90-day business revenue is [actual number]. I can verify this with bank statements if helpful"
"Too short business history" → "The LLC was formed in [date], but I've been operating in this industry for [years]. Here's the structure of my client base and recurring revenue model: [brief description]"
Step 4: ask explicitly: "Would you be willing to manually review the application based on this additional context?"
The recon analyst now has authority to override. They can approve the original product at the original limit, approve at a lower limit, or recommend a different product. About 30-50% of denied applications reverse to approval through this single phone call
The reason this works:
The algorithm is designed for volume processing. It can't have a conversation. It can't ask follow-up questions. It can't weigh context. It just scores you against fixed variables and votes
The reconsideration team exists specifically to capture the applications the algorithm got wrong. They're measured on approval rate, customer retention, and revenue per converted applicant. They WANT to approve you because their job depends on getting yes-decisions out of the no-pile
Bonus play: if you get denied on Chase Ink Business Cash, call the Chase Business Reconsideration line and ask to be considered for Chase Ink Business Unlimited instead. Different underwriting profile. Often approves where the first product denied
A client got denied for Amex Business Gold last month. 731 FICO. Brand new LLC. Algorithm denied for "insufficient business history." He called Amex recon at 11am the next morning. Spent 14 minutes on the call. Explained his business model (marketing agency with 4 retainer clients), articulated his projected revenue ($240K trailing 12 months projected), offered to send bank statements if needed
Approved 9 minutes later for $42K limit at 0% APR for 12 months. Same person, same business, same credit score. Different vote
The denial is a vote, not a verdict. The second vote is one phone call away and almost nobody makes it
dm me "funding" and i'll show you how you can qualify for up to 250k in 0% APR funding (if you have a 700+)
