@DrJRink @dsderian @LiangRhea Q was posted by Aus doctor, so I replied with my own Aus experience (ophthal: 6-8 yr under/postgrad med school, 4-5 general med jr doc, 5-6 yr ophthal training + subspec fellowship). Optom in Oz 4-5 yr under/postgrad. Huge difference

@LiangRhea @dsderian There is definitely an element of deception. An ophthalmologist studies for 17 years after high school. An optometrist studies 4 years. Clearly not the same degree but patients do not know the difference. Begs the question why an optometrist might choose the Dr title 🤔

@LiangRhea Pretty simple, they aren’t doctors. The title is for those who are medical doctors and PhD doctors. Some might argue that degrees that confer ‘Doctorate of XYZ’ might also call themselves doctors (eg applies to some optom degrees. And of course vets! They’re the real doctors!!
